Raw aluminum is lightweight and affordable, but it has a couple of major flaws: it is relatively soft, scratches easily, and can react with acidic substances or oils.
Anodizing fixes this. It is an electrochemical process that thickens the metal's natural protective oxide layer.
Crucially, anodizing is not a coating. It isn't like paint or Teflon that simply sits on top of the metal. Instead, the process alters the surface of the aluminum itself. This creates a surface that is exceptionally hard, highly resistant to corrosion, and non-reactive. You can also dye anodized aluminum vibrant colors. Because the dye is locked inside the microscopic pores of the oxide layer before it's sealed, the color will never chip or peel off.

Is Anodized Aluminum Safe?
Yes. In fact, it is one of the safest materials you can use for consumer goods.
Because the anodized layer is chemically inert, it does not react with food, water, or oils. Regulatory bodies like the FDA and Health Canada recognize properly sealed anodized aluminum as food-safe.
Unlike raw aluminum—which can leach tiny amounts of metal when exposed to heat or acidic ingredients (like tomatoes)—anodized aluminum creates a secure, permanent barrier that keeps the raw metal completely locked away.
